Midnight Makes

So, what have I been up to over the past week or so?

Well, apart from an awesome weekend away with nearly ALL of my family, lounging about in the sun, barbecuing, eating cake, loosing kites and watching movies projected on to the side of my Brothers humongous van (he’s Wagtail Joinery!), I have had a slightly magical week!

famfestProof! Can you guess the movie?! We are all gathered round with a fire pit, in deck chairs!

The camping trip left me with a bad back, which only lasted for a couple days but along with the heat left me pretty exhausted to be honest. Then I had a stomach bug- which I am totally blaming the weather for! I am not a happy sun bunny, I am a misty moisty cold weather kinda gal!

In between my whining about the heat however; I have had some inspiration strike! Look at my new Alice in Wonderland themed Mini Top Hat, Mini Top Hat Kit and Fascinator Kit!!

I have a confession… this gorgeous bundle of loveliness is about to be packaged up and sent off for a teeny tiny featurette (mini squeal of excitement!), but more on that later. The Mini Top Hat and Fascinator Kit’s will be available on my Etsy store soon (let me know if you’re dying to get your hands on one and I can ship sooner!).

The Mini Top Hat features Alice in Wonderland playing cards, feathers and a ”In This Style 10/6” card, with Black Lace, Velvet Ribbon and Vintage Buttons… I am loving this Kit!! The Fascinator Kit is more Alice themed, and I channelled the traditional image of Alice with a little sweetness, Pale Blue Paper and Moire style Silk, flowers and Vintage Buttons… I have also tucked a few Cream Feathers in this Kit for a little something extra!

And oh my gosh, I had so much fun making this little hat! I started it in the heat of the noon-day sun whilst camping and I think it has turned out wonderfully! I am making up a Gold Silk and Gold Lace one in a similar style as I type this, and a couple of the oft requested Mini Tricorn Hats so expect more pic’s soon!

I have also been receiving regular reports of my first ever magazine shoot squee!! I made up a costume about two weeks ago and I can’t share anything until it is published but I am desperate to share, the photos are truly, magnificently stunning and I became quite emotional looking at a piece I had created here at Midnight Heights looking suddenly so stunning!

So, along with commissions, the ever present orders for Spats and the above, magazine and featurette loveliness, this week has been quite delightful on the creativity front!

I do hope your week has been as lovely,

Exciting times at Midnight Heights

Whilst remaining acceptingly sceptical with a healthy dollop of nerves I am in the process of sending out my first Press Release and Wholesale Order information. It has taken several months of preparation, photos being taken then discarded and taken again, re-writes and editing however; finally I am more happy than I am not so I have decided ‘heck, lets just do this thing’!

All of this planning has put me in mind of all the Mini Top Hats I have sent off across the World, and I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the many people who follow me, help me and who have been supporting me in this endeavour as I take the next step.

If you are reading this as a proud owner of the Laura After Midnight Mini Top Hat Kit, please gain as much inspiration for decorating your creation as possible, as you can see sometimes a bow is enough!

black hat photo shoot

This gorgeous little Black Silk Mini Top Hat was the first I ever made, and the first I sold! Taking inspiration for Victorian Riding Hats, I simply made an outsize silk bow to attach to the back, with a Birdcage Veil trimmed with some Organza Ribbon to finish the effect. It was bought by a photographer in L.A. who very kindly sent me the above photograph.

Black Hat 1 Black Hat 2

As you can see, it is super simple however; I just adore that! The next hat was a private commission and it was the first time I started to bring some more of my Costume knowledge in to the Mini Top Hats. Created with overlays of Cotton, Net and Lace, this little Hat looks like a slice of beautiful antique China.

It also has some stunning Vintage Button adornments, with a ruffly lace edge to offset and emphasize the Tricorn. Also my first Tricorn, I was very pleased with the result. So I made another…

Tricorn 1 Tricoen 2

The thing I love about making Tricorns’ is, you get to use more Buttons! Again however; this has some pretty simple decorations which help to make the Tricorn shape stand out. This little darling went to live in Georgia, USA.

Another Mini Top Hat destined for a Wedding ensemble was this gorgeous Silk and Pearl pure white Hat. I overlaid Antique Victorian Corset Lace around the Brim and added a Vintage Art Deco mother of pearl Button and Feather. Sent off in its little Hat Box to Germany, this Hat was worn for a Victorian Steampunk themed Wedding!

And a couple more…

I had no idea they’re were so many out there in the World! How glorious!! Remember you can purchase your own little bit of Midnight visit the Laura After Midnight Etsy store where you can find Hats, Kits and many more delights.

Some stunning new Mini Top Hats.

New things have been listed (finally!) in the Laura After Midnight Etsy store, hooray!! I feel as if I am a whirlwind of activity at the moment, and had actually given myself today off. What do I find myself up to? Writing a new Zine, and excitedly photographing things for Etsy then listing! Oh well, I’ll sleep when I’m dead and all that!

Gold Hat 1 Gold Hat 4 Gold Hat 2

In the spare time that I do have, I’ve been hand embellishing some Mini Top Hats I made a while back with all sorts of lace, spangles and adornments I have found in my stash, and I do have to say that I am mighty impressed with the results! I bought a Vintage Embroidery book a while back which was all about the results Chain Stitch can give you if you layer it up.  As you can see I have used it to make Flowers and mixed it in with Spangles for a very effective and highly embellished look.

Above are just two, there are more in the shop! Because my line of Spats have proven so very, very popular, I have been working towards make a new and slightly more colorful range. What do you think? I adore the Pirate Spats soo much!!

Stripe Spats 1 White Spats 1

In other news: I am on target for my 2nd Zine! Eek!

I am furiously commanding Photoshop to do my bidding as we speak, scanning in illustrations and generally having a high old time. This one is actually going to be given away as a free little extra with any Zines I sell and is all about the Vintage Sewing Books I use, and find most helpful. As I think every Seamstress (or Seamster!!) should own a couple and I have hand illustrated the covers and written a small review for a teeny tiny yellow Zine.

Right, time for tea me thinks…

New to my Etsy shop, my wonderful Fascinator Kits!

Just in time for all those weddings… Available in a multitude of different fabrics (if you don’t see a pattern or colour way you like, ask!), I am about to send out dozens of Press Releases across the land so I have been frantically photographing, tweaking in Photoshop & collecting contacts in preparation. It is exhausting but very exciting, & I can’t wait to hear back & find out if my Mini Top Hat Kits & Fascinator Kits are to be stocked in further shops.

Priced at £10.00, or £12.50 for ones made up from Vintage fabrics, these little kits include everything to make a darling little fascinator, with fabric, decorations, hair clip/comb, veiling to make a Birdcage Veil & a fully illustrated instruction booklet.

fasc 10

Each Fascinator Kit includes all Fabric & stiffener needed, binding, clip or comb, veil, Instruction Booklet & Pattern Sheet.

Fasc 14

I am really pleased with this little Kit, & especially so with the Pattern Sheet, which includes three different patterns to choose from including Circle, Heart & Tear Drop (which is my favourite!). If they are traced off & used, with just a quick dash to the local haberdashery each kit can be made again in each style.

I think they would make a lovely addition to someone’s Wedding, or maybe as Bridesmaids gifts, or even as a fun Hen or Birthday Party idea! I am also working on ‘Ranges’ including a Retro Burlesque inspired range, a dainty floral Wedding range & a darker more Victorian inspired range for both the Mini Top hat Kits, & the Fascinator Kits because, whilst I enjoy making up one-off Kits, I recognise the need to have certain stock available at all times so I am able to make up multiples & ship quickly. It is all such a learning curve!

Sugar Pastel Inspiration

Have you noticed the change in the winds? Summer is coming, I can smell it on the breeze, the Magnolias are soon to bloom & everywhere I look there are Daffodils & Tulips! I love this time of year, it is not yet too hot for me & the winds can whip all the cobwebs & tiredness of a long Winter away.

Because I am soon to officially launch my Mini Top Hat & Fascinator Kits I have been thinking about colour ranges & new ideas have been bursting forth! I am in love with Sugar Pastels with a little oompf… what do you think? I am pretty sure any Bride, Bridesmaid or Vintage party go-er would love one of my Kits in these colours!

Fascinating Feedback!

I have just received the first feedback from a Fascinator Kit I sent out as part of a give away on Facebook for Laura After Midnight. If you shared or ‘liked’ the image of my new Fascinator Kits you got put in to a hat to be sent one! The response was phenomenal, & everyone seemed to love the idea of the dinky & oh so pretty Fascinator Kits.

The ones I sent out to the lucky winners were the first design, since then I have added a pattern sheet with three different patterns to follow. There is now a choice of Tear Drop, Circle or Heart, & of course I have changed to packaging slightly to reflect the ‘look’ of Laura After Midnight. They are now branded as a product, & I think they fit in well with the Mini Top hat Kits.

So it is with many, many thanks to Adele W that I share the following images! Adele has photographed them beautifully on her favourite Vintage plate & is extremely happy with the result… as am I!

ADELE 7   ADELE 2

”Hi Laura… As you can see the result is wonderful.

It is fun n flirty and was incredibly straightforward to make. I thought the birdcage veil was very clever (I’ve definitely learnt something new there).

I even think I have found some dress fabric to make an outfit (just need the right occasion now).”

ADELE 6   ADELE 1

Thank you so much for the amazing review, & wonderful photographs; yet again you have come up with a way to use the ribbons and decoration provided in a way I wouldn’t! I am looking forward to seeing you all put together with an outfit to match!

I am always looking for people to try my Kits out, it is wonderful to have the feedback from complete strangers, people new to the craft or just enthusiastic sewers alike. As I am currently developing Press Packs for these little darlings the feedback I have received has certainly helped me develop the Kits, iron out any language barriers (as a long term seamstress I sometimes forget steps which are obvious to me, but not so to others! A hazard of my trade I am learning!!), & generally make me a little more confident in the product.

I look forward to sharing more images from the other winners as I receive them.

This is the second Kit Adele has given feedback for. Her first was a Black Silk Mini Top Hat Kit.

New stitches

I thought I’d share what I have been working on in my downtime this week. I’ve really gotten into embroidery over the last few months, and I am excited to try my remembered skills out on my Mini Top Hats!

I am making quite a few Mini Top Hats at the moment as my Etsy shop is sadly lacking in this department…

white hat 1 white hat 2

I get quite a lot of messages on Etsy about commissions for White Silk Mini Top Hats, so I thought I’d make up this little number. As the wedding season is fast approaching, I have made it a little more romantic than I normally might but I have to say I am very pleased with the result. The flowers are appliqued, then embroidered over. I shall probably add in some beads as well for the texture.

When I have finished decorating I still have to trim… can’t decide if I want feathers or not but I am definitely going to add in a buttoned on Birdcage Veil. I haven’t done one in a  while & in looking back over my Etsy sales they were popular, & look fantastic with the added bonus that they can be removed.

I also have a couple Mini Top Hat Kits in White Silk, & wanted some example photographs to show people what can be done with the plainer kits. I have been surreptitiously listening in to the conversations customers have about my little kits & one of the notes seems to be that the more colourful  Kits really stand out but the plain black or white look a little dull, & they wonder what to do with them! Hopefully this will inspire…

Fun in Bath!

I thought I would share a couple pictures from Sundays Market. It is a beautiful market, and if you can I would urge you to visit the next one!

bam 6The stall, it looked so lovely and stuffed full of enticing goodies! I was quite proud of myself… as it turned out I was squished on to a small plot with another seller so taking the dresses I had designed and half made but not finished would have been problematic.

bam 5 bam 4

Close ups of the stall… I do so love my glass bowl full of Springtime Bunnies! The new Fascinator Kits looked scrumptious as well, and got oodles of attention.

Told you it was pretty… can’t wait to do one in the summer! The music they had was great as well.

Bath Artisan Market

Tomorrow I shall be at the biggest market I have shown at to date! Somewhat disappointingly I have been unable to finish my capsule collection of dresses for it as I had hoped however; this is because I displayed some restraint & decided to make them immaculately rather than rush as I normally would… so in the end it’s good news as I shall soon be able to look forward to photographing my first model shoot outside of Film or Theater work! Yay!! Of course I have to find my model first, which is proving surprisingly difficult, but interesting.

In the mean time I have the following to show you. The very beautiful flier for The Bath Artisan market:

BAM-March-FLYER-final

They have just released the line up of bands and they sound great! I shall definitely be letting you all know how this goes!!

Secondly this:

hat 3

How crazy awesome is this hat?! It has been residing on the mantel piece in my living room, & every time I am bored I have been adding more & more detailing to it! It will be debuting tomorrow, & I shall list it on Etsy if it isn’t snapped up by some lucky lady. I have been getting a lot of commission orders for bespoke Mini Top Hats- which start at £45.00, & ship in 7-10 days so get your order in for the Summer wedding season!!

Lastly:

fas 1

New packaging for my Fascinator Kits! Isn’t it adorable? They look like delightful little chocolates, all ready to be snapped up. They too are debuting tomorrow & I can’t wait to see the reaction they get.

It’s all happenin’ here at Midnight Heights, wish me luck!
